Oscar De La Hoya!

Something is very wrong with my brain, I just thought you all should know.

All night, I kept chasing the name Oscar De La Hoya round and round in my brain. I would wake up from a deep sleep with my first conscious thought being "Oscar De La Hoya."

Sometimes it was a question: "Oscar De La Hoya?"

Sometimes it was an exclamation: "Holy Oscar De La Hoya!!!"

Sometimes it was a simple declarative statement: "And then, Oscar De La Hoya."

For one memorable and seemingly interminable stretch between 4:17 and 5:02 or so, I engaged my brain in a long and circular debate about whether fixating on the name Oscar De La Hoya was somehow racist. Not surprisingly, considering the time and my sorry, sorry state of mind, I came to no conclusion.

If there's help out there, please send it soon.

  1. Try this one on for size:

(to the tune of Handel's Messiah, Hallelujah Chorus)

    Enchilada!
    No de nada!
    Enchilada-
    No da nada-
    Enchi-hil-lada!!!

Really REALLY gets stuck in your head (and your wife's), especially if you sing it once out loud... LOUDLY. Why one would do such a thing? I blame T.V. and/or the internet.

Here, lets try it with your example:

    De La Hoya!
    Chevy Nova!
    De La Hoya-
    Chevy Nova-
    De La-ha Hoya!!!

You are welcome. I am insane.

  2. And I thought I was the only one who thinks Oscar De La Hoya has a sort of hypnotic ring to it.

Once, in my twenties, I'd get "superfluous" and "hyperbole" bouncing around in my head.

    I don't know why.

Found your blog through Kenna's "Fear Not."

  3. Sally, I have the same problem other times with other words. Always weird words, too. I was on "cacaphony" for a while. I wish I knew where the hell it comes from.

And Lou B., when I asked for help, I meant help me, not provide aid directly to my mental illness, which I don't mind saying already has the upper hand around here. (It took me a few days to comment because I've been huddled in a corner chanting "De La Hoya, Chevy Nova" over and over. Thanks.)
